Brooklyn Matcha

The Brooklyn cafe known for matcha.

Café Mia in Bushwick has one of Brooklyn's most-recommended matcha programs. Ceremonial-grade, double-dosed, whisked fresh.

Brooklyn has plenty of matcha. Most of it is fine. Some of it is genuinely great. Café Mia is consistently named among the great category, and the reasons are specific — not vague marketing claims, but actual technique and sourcing decisions you can taste in the cup.

What makes our matcha different

Ceremonial-grade only

Every matcha drink we serve uses ceremonial-grade matcha. We don't keep culinary-grade behind the counter at all. Most cafes use culinary in their lattes to save cost; we don't.

Double the standard dose

A typical matcha latte uses 2g. We use 4g. The doubling is what makes the matcha read clearly through milk and ice — without it, an iced matcha is mostly milk with a green hint.

Whisked per drink

We sift the powder, whisk with 175°F water using a chasen, and pour over ice with cold milk. Each drink takes 90 seconds. Most cafes use pre-mixed concentrate; we don't.

Fresh tin rotation

Matcha goes stale within 2–3 weeks of opening a tin. We rotate often.

Where Café Mia fits in the Brooklyn matcha scene

Brooklyn has 4–5 spots that take matcha seriously. Café Mia is one of them. Williamsburg has its specialty matcha spots; Greenpoint has emerging programs; Bedford-Stuyvesant has fewer but quality is rising. Bushwick is increasingly recognized for matcha, and we're a big part of why.

If you've had matcha at chains, please give a real specialty matcha a try. The flavor difference is substantial.

What to order on your first matcha visit

  1. Iced matcha latte with oat milk. Most forgiving entry point.
  2. Hot matcha latte. Best on a cool morning.
  3. Matcha shot. Just whisked matcha in 2oz hot water — the connoisseur's order.
  4. Iced matcha lemonade (summer). Sounds weird, tastes incredible.
  5. Pink rose matcha (winter). Photogenic and genuinely good.
